New Ammonia HP Equipment for higher plant efficiency, safety and reliability
New Ammonia HP Equipment for higher plant efficiency, safety and reliability
High pressure equipment, such as Ammonia Converter and Boiler Feed Water Preheater, are the core of the ammonia synthesis loop.
Replacement of vintage equipment is beneficial in terms of performances but also of plant reliability and safety. Installation of a new ammonia converter, with the possibility of catalyst volume increase and possibly a more efficient thermodynamic configuration, enhances the plant productivity increasing the plant capacity and/or de-bottlenecking the existing synthesis loop with lower specific energy consumptions. Moreover, new Casale design increases plant safety and reliability during both normal operation and turn-around activities.
BFW Preheater replacement, coupled with a new Ammonia Converter, enhances the heat recovery and it can be installed with the typical direct connection, saving piping cost.
Thanks to Casale design and experience, plant shut-down for the intervention is minimized with no impact on normal turn-down schedule and costs.
All above proven benefits, together with references of successful HP equipment replacement, are presented and discussed.

Davide Carrara
Technology Leader (Ammonia Synthesis)
Davide Carrara graduated in Chemical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan in 2010 and has been working in Casale since then.
First as Process Engineer and then as Senior Process engineer of the Syngas Department, he has been involved in proposals, revamping studies and design of ammonia and methanol plants. He now holds the position of Technology Leader for Ammonia Synthesis.
